Zeke, an Australian Shepherd, and his owner, Trisha Hubbs, visit residents at the senior care facility weekly to provide animal-assisted therapy. Currently receiving training from the Human Animal Bond In Tennessee (HABIT), Zeke helps residents with their physical and occupational therapy, while serving as the perfect companion.
“It’s a delight to watch the interaction between the residents and Zeke. He always brings a smile to their faces,” said Wanda Headrick, administrator at Hillcrest South. “We’re proud to offer this service to our residents.”
Studies suggest that visiting with animals can ease depression and loneliness and provide welcome changes to established routines.
“Many residents are more active and responsive during and after their visits with Zeke. In fact, one resident, who would not walk, happily walked with Zeke down the hall,” said Headrick.
Hillcrest HealthCare, a not-for-profit organization, is the largest skilled and long-term care system for seniors and the disabled in Knoxville. Founded in 1960, it currently operates 560 long-term care and 28 assisted living beds on three campuses in Knox County.
