HILLCREST RESIDENT CELEBRATES 102nd BIRTHDAY

Helen Fitzmaurice is no stranger to a party. So it was no surprise when she turned 102 this month that she was surrounded by family and friends.

Fitzmaurice celebrated her birthday at Hillcrest North on May 13 with a party that included a cake donated by Rural/Metro.

“This is the best cake I’ve had in 102 years,” said Fitzmaurice.

After spending most of her life in Chicago, Fitzmaurice moved here to Knoxville to be closer to several of her grandchildren and their families.

“She always loves getting together with people,” said her granddaughter Patsy Fitzmaurice, who attended the party. “She dressed up every day including heels until she was 90. She was always very well dressed when we were growing up.”

Even today Fitzmaurice enjoys activities at Hillcrest like cooking club, bingo and church.

“She is a joy to have around,” said Cathie Haviland, activities director for Hillcrest. “We’re glad to be able to do something special for her on her birthday.”

Hillcrest HealthCare, a not-for-profit organization, is the largest skilled and long-term care system for seniors and the disabled in Knoxville. Founded in 1960, it currently operates 560 long-term care and 28 assisted living beds on three campuses in Knox County.
